This virtual placement is part of the Business Analytics (BAPG) certificate program. The students will participate in research projects on very large and/or complex data sets to support your business decisions using Business Analytics.

The student will work in a team environment, network with other professionals, and experience the application of business analytics in an organizational setting. The scope of the placement ranges from collection, manipulation and mining of data sets, documentation analysis and model creation to improve organization needs.

Students apply analytical models, methodologies, and tools learned in the program to analyze data sets to predict trends and challenges, and investigate with the purpose of developing analytics solution for your organization. Faculty mentors will work with students to ensure the capstone project reflects, and encompasses, best practices for big data analytics and project management.

  • A report on students’ findings and details of the analytics solution.
  • A final presentation of the solution and recommendations to your organization.

Requirements

The virtual placement provides an opportunity for businesses and learners to work with organizations on data analytics, research, and related projects. This may include gathering data in the forms of surveys, storing, organizing, and cleaning data in SQL, data collection & preparation, data modelling and analysis, building dashboards, solution deployment plan, or other projects related to business analytics.

You should submit a high-level proposal/business problem statement including relevant data sets and definitions, a list of acceptable tools (if applicable), and expected deliverables. Students working on virtual placements could be provided based on a non-disclosure agreement or in an anonymized/synthetic data format that is relevant to your organization and business problem. The placement course instructors will review the documents to confirm the scope and timing of the proposed problem and its alignment with the placement course requirements.

Analytics tasks may be applicable for (however they are not limited to) the following topics:

  1. Customer acquisition and retention
  2. Merchandising for trade areas (categories)
  3. Quantifying Customer Lifetime Value
  4. Determining media consumption (mass vs digital)
  5. Reduction of client churn (lower abandonment)
  6. Cross-sell and up-sell opportunities
  7. Develop high propensity target markets
  8. Customer segmentation (behavioural or transactional)
  9. New Product/Product line development
  10. Market Basket Analysis to understand which items are often purchased together
  11. Ranking markets by potential revenue
  12. Consumer personification

Note: Students can sign a NDA, if required.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a virtual internship to students related to analytics, research, or elements of their program (which may include, but is not limited to, database, dashboards, statistics, programming, analysis, research)

Placements are unpaid, for-credit experience for students, but honorariums are welcome if your organization is able to provide a stipend for the students.
