The overall aim of the capstone project is to help students relate acquired business analytic knowledge to real business problems. This looks like an internship, a learning experience well-recognized for its impact on the student’s application of classroom knowledge to the world of work, and student’s knowledge of careers and critical career success factors. This course is an excellent opportunity for students to practice problem-solving skills. The course uses Python as the analytical tool to formulate and solve problems based on a variety of mathematical modelling techniques. Companies can define projects in data visualization, data analytics, database systems, data analysis, cloud-based services, software development, and general business analytics projects.

Project Summary: Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on learners from Cape Breton University to be your learner-consultants, in a project-based experience. Learners will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools. Learners in this program/experience are very motivated and have the qualities to conduct research activities which could advance the profession of healthcare management. The capstone course is a culmination of the healthcare management program that sets the ground work for this course. This course requires students to broaden their knowledge base to analyze specific healthcare case studies, situations, issues &/or research to demonstrate critical thinking for problem solving and decision making. What can our learners do for your company? Learners in groups of 5-6 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research (secondary) and analysis.There will be one project manager per team who will be the direct contact to you and your organization. Project activities that learners can complete may include, but are not limited to: Understanding basics about the importance and function of leadership through understanding leadership styles, proficiencies, and competency to achieve excellence in managing within a diverse healthcare system. Demonstrate collective leadership capabilities to discuss healthcare issues, collaborate an administrative solution, and to provide meaningful feedback to peers. Analyze specific healthcare case studies, situations, issues and /or research to demonstrate critical thinking for practical problem solving, analysis and decision making. Students will understand and self-reflect on their own leadership styles focused on personal leadership throughout the course. Students will prepare and deliver a presentation applying key leadership theories, conduct professional research and literature reviews on a specific healthcare issue, analyze the findings and providing recommendations of implementation strategies to address the issue within the organization. Health Care Analytics Project

At the end of the course students will do the project in groups. The focus is on the main issues in the Canadian Healthcare System. Students will choose the project of interest. An example of projects can be: primary care, emergency department, community care, mental health and so on. Students will conduct a literature review of the issue and summarize main findings. They review main issues and steps that have been taken to solve this issues. Within the project students will look at data relating the topic and conduct primary analysis. Students will list best practices and suggest future directions. Other areas include the use of healthcare records; how are doctors and healthcare providers viewing and using EMR; how can better integration of EMR be achieved; a review of EMR technologies. Approaches in E health and reviews about its use is another area of research.

This is an experiential course and it is designed to foster critical thinking and real-time decision making, with students applying their knowledge and skills to the challenge at hand. We are beginning the Fall semester, completion will be by mid-December 2024. We have a confidentiality agreement with all “clients”. In addition, the work becomes the intellectual property of the “client” so we don’t share it with others- it is theirs.
